BlackBerry has been trying to encourage as many developers as possible to create apps for BB10, knowing that consumer demand for a wide range of apps can drive device choices.

To increase the number of apps available in time for the BB10 launch, BlackBerry made it possible for some apps designed for Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android OS to be easily adapted to BB10. Some of the apps ported from Android to BB10 don’t have the full range of functionality found in their original configuration.

BlackBerry is attempting to reclaim market share from Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and Android, both of which have hundreds of thousands of apps available to users.

BlackBerry’s new BB10 smartphone, the Z10, hits U.S. AT&T (NYSE:T) stores on Friday. It is already available in 21 other countries.

Shares of BlackBerry rose more than 1% in Thursday midday trading.
