BlackBerry Gets Biggest Phone Order Ever

But the company did not reveal the identity of the buyer


blackberry 630 rimmIn a much-needed bit of good news, BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) announced on Wednesday that a single customer has purchased one million of its latest smartphones.

The struggling Canadian handset maker did not identify the buyer, but said it would begin shipping the phones at once. The order marks the biggest single order ever for BlackBerry phones, the Associated Press noted.

Formerly the leading smartphone maker, BlackBerry has stumbled since the 2007 debut of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, ultimately seeing its market share crash as customer defected to both the iPhone and subsequent smartphones running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android OS.

BlackBerry recently unveiled its newest smartphones, the Z10 and Q10, which run is long-delayed BB10 operating system. The company’s future is riding on the success of the new phones.

To reinforce its brand, the company changed its name from Research in Motion to BlackBerry — its smartphone brand name — earlier this year.

Shares of BlackBerry were mostly flat in Thursday morning trading.
