Boeing Hopes to Fly 787s Again in ‘Weeks’

787dreamliner 300x188 Boeing Hopes to Fly 787s Again in 'Weeks'[1]Changes to the design of the lithium-ion battery systems on board Boeing’s (NYSE:BA[2]) 787 Dreamliner could have the troubled jets back in the air soon[3], the company says.

Boeing is hoping that new battery enclosures and other upgrades will pass Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) tests. If they do, the high-tech jets could be cleared for flight as earlier as next month, Bloomberg notes.

A company executive said it was “reasonable” to predict that Dreamliners were be back in service in “weeks, not months.” He noted that if the company missed that estimate, it would not be by a significant amount of time.

Dreamliners around the world were grounded in January after a series of incidents led to emergency landings[4] and a fire on board one jet.

The problems were ultimately linked to overheating issues with the plane’s lithium-ion batteries[5]. Boeing has been working with regulators to resolve the problem.

With a backlog of more than 800 Dreamliner orders worth $187 billion, getting the planes back in the air has been a priority for the aerospace giant[6].

Shares of Boeing climbed fractionally in Friday morning trading.
