The thefts — which amount to more than 100 pounds of the sweet, chocolatey stuff per day — are occurring at Columbia University, reports The London Daily Mail.
Demand — and theft — has escalated to the point where the university is spending $5,000 per week to keep the product available. In at least two of the school’s cafeterias, the thefts are blatant and widespread as students simply take the stuff back to their dorms or apartments.
The two dining halls involved host more than 5,600 students per day. One person told the school newspaper that, “Students have been filling cups of Nutella to-go in Ferris Booth Commons and taking the full jars out of John Jay, which means we’re going through product faster than anticipated.”
Columbia added Nutella to its menu just one month ago and has already spent $20,000 on the stuff. At this rate, it’s estimated that it will spend another $25,000 on it through the end of the school year.
