The magazine tested 12 different mattresses — six innerspring and six foam — in trying to determine which provides the best value.
The magazine says it poked and prodded the mattress with weights and various gadgets to determine which ones provided the best rest and held up to wear and tear. It also tested for both back and side support so it could rank the mattresses by how a consumer slept.
Also tested was how well the mattress retained and lost heat, depending on temperature outside the bed environment. Consumer Reports also evaluated how much the mattresses sagged after several years of simulated use by running a 308-pound roller over each one repeatedly.
Consumer Reports is making its Mattress Buying Guide available on the web.
