Cracker Barrel to Add New Category to Menu

Anxious not to miss out of the trend toward healthy eating, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (NASDAQ:CBRL[1]) is planning to introduce a number of new low-calorie menu items[2] at its 621 restaurants.

The chain is testing breakfast and dinner meals with fewer than 600 calories developed by a Florida dietitian for its new Wholesome Fixin’s menu category. The restaurant chain says it hopes to roll out the new items this summer, USA Today notes.

Changes to its menu come after the chain conducted consumer surveys that found its patrons were eating at other dining venues due to the perception that Cracker Barrel’s menu wasn’t healthy enough.

While the company is keeping quiet about the new items, an analyst says the new category includes a breakfast sandwich with eggs and cheese on flat bread, a grilled catfish dish with vegetables, and baked chicken with vegetables.

The new breakfast dishes are priced between $3.99 and $7.99, while dinners will be priced from $6.99 to $9.49.

Last year, McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD[3]) indicated that it would shift away from menu items containing beef toward ones with chicken[4] due, in part, to rising calorie-count and health consciousness among its consumers.

Shares of Cracker Barrel fell fractionally in Tuesday morning trading.
