A falling sign in an airport in Alabama has left a child dead, two others injured and their mother unconscious.
The sign — an Arrivals/Departure sign at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport — fell on the Kansas family of seven Friday, reports The Associated Press.
The mother and three of her children were struck by the sign. One boy was killed, while two other received serious injuries. The mother suffered broken ankles, a broken pelvis and is still unconscious and in intensive care. Her condition is listed as serious.
Officials at the airport are investigating why the sign fell. It was placed there during renovations to the concourse which reopened March 13. Airport management has removed a similar sign on the concourse pending the outcome of the investigation.
Because she has not regained consciousness since the accident, the mother does not know of her child’s death, the family’s priest told AP.
