Ford Apologizes for Bondage-Style Cartoon Ads

Ford Motor Company1 300x191 Ford Apologizes for Bondage Style Cartoon AdsFord (NYSE:F) has egg on its face in India after a series of racy ads were published online, creating an outcry.

The ads, which feature Ford vehicles and the Ford logo, were created by an outside India-based ad agency. They were not used in a commercial campaign, but were published on an advertising design website. Ford said it was trying to determine if anyone at the company saw or approved the ads prior to their online appearance, ABC News noted.

One ad showed Italy’s former prime minister and playboy Silvio Berlusconi in a Ford vehicle with three women tied up in the back. The ad’s caption praised the car’s trunk space with the words “leave your troubles behind…” In another ad, hotel heiress and celebrity Paris Hilton is pictured abducting reality TV’s Kardashian sisters.

The ads created a stir in India, which has recently enacted laws meant to reduce violence against women. Both Ford and the ad agency’s U.K.-based parent, WPP Group, have apologized.

Earlier this month, Ford recalled 230,000 minivans sold in the U.S. over potentially hazardous rust buildup in rear wheel wells.

Shares of Ford were flat in Tuesday morning trading.
