Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Lower Res: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will launch a cheaper version of the iPhone in June or July, MacRumors notes. The less expensive iPhone, aimed at emerging markets, will not feature the high-resolution Retina touchscreens that have been available on all iPhones since the iPhone 4. The prediction comes from an RBC Capital Markets analyst, who says the cheaper iPhone will have a 4-inch screen similar to the iPhone 5, but will ditch the iPhone 5′s aluminum and glass casing in favor of plastic. By adopting a lower-resolution screen, Apple will trim the costs of making the phone, lowering its price and boosting margins. The new report runs counter to other analysts, who say the cheaper iPhone will feature a Retina screen. The RBC analyst also forecasts the launch of the iPhone 5S this summer.
New Rule: Apple has notified app developers that they must configure app submissions to work with the screen sizes of all Apple devices, CNET notes. New apps and updates to existing apps will have to be compatible with the iPhone 5′s 4-inch screen by May 1. Some developers have excluded the new screen size from older apps originally designed for earlier versions of the iPhone that featured a 3.5-inch screen. Apps that fail to comply with the rule will not be approved for the App Store. Apple has previously insisted that app developers design apps to work with its high-resolution Retina displays.
Added Scrutiny: Apple is facing an anti-trust investigation by the European Union over the way it distributes iPhones and iPads, Reuters notes. Sources say that several carriers had made informal complaints about Apple’s demand that they subsidize iPhone sales. Apple’s iPhone marketing requirements also provoked some criticism. A spokesperson for the European Commission, the EU’s main regulatory body, admitted that no formal complaints about Apple had been received, but said the Commission was “actively monitoring developments in this market.” The commission said it would act to protect consumers from anti-competitive behavior.
