Hasselhoff Returns to Germany to Save the Berlin Wall

Location was one of his defining career moments

david hasselhoffStar performer David Hasselhoff is returning to the site of one of his triumphant moments: The Berlin Wall.

In 1989, Hasselhoff — famous for his roles in Knight Rider and Baywatch — became a singing mega-star in Germany when he performed his hit “Jump In My Car” on the Berlin Wall for audiences on both sides, reports The Independent.

The actor and singer is returning to the wall in an attempt to save one of the few parts that remain. One of the surviving stretches has been purchased by the developer Living Bauhaus and is scheduled for demolition. The developer hopes to put up a set of luxury apartments on the site.

Hasselhoff is appearing in Berlin in protest of the demolition of the 20-meter stretch. He told reporters at a rally Sunday that, “On my last tour there were thousands of Germans holding up signs saying ‘We love you, thank you for Mauerfall (the fall of the wall).’ This last piece of the wall is really sacred, it’s the last memorial to the people who died and to the perseverance of freedom.”
