taco bell doritos ranch taco[1]With U.S. unemployment still hovering at historic highs, it’s good to remember that even little things can sometimes have an over-sized effect[2].

That is apparently the case with the Doritos Locos Taco, a creation of Yum Brands’ (NYSE:YUM[3]) Taco Bell. The popular restaurant chain hired 15,000 new workers last year and company executives say the taco — based on the popular snack ships made by PepsiCo‘s (NYSE:PEP[4]) Frito Lay division — was mostly responsible for the payroll increase, ABC News notes.

Taco Bell introduced the Doritos Locos Taco[5] this time last year. Since its debut, the restaurant has sold 375 million of the tacos. Company executives hope to leverage the taco’s popularity with Doritos-starved consumers to open 2,000 new restaurants over the next decade.

Not bad for a taco.

Taco Bell is expanding its lineup of Doritos Locos Tacos, adding a “Cool Ranch” flavored version[6].
