The FAA’s working group — which is composed of government and industry officials — is set to recommend against the rule that personal electronics must be off during takeoffs and landings, reports The New York Times.
Anonymous sources from the working group — that will announce its findings July 31 — say that the FAA is planning to end the requirement. If all goes well, says the source, the FAA could announce the change by the end of 2013.
The rules concerning electronic devices has generated high-level interest. Both retiring FCC chair Julius Genachowski and Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) have expressed publicly that the rule should be changed.
