Move Over Wine, Young Women Have New Preferred Drink

Beer takes the lead in new poll

The Bad News BeersWine is no longer the adult beverage of choice for young women.

The new winner — at least for women in the 18 to 34 demographic — is beer, according to The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

The 2012 Gallup poll pins the shift in alcohol preference to the explosion in craft beers and microbrews. Prior to that, wine had been the favored beverage since at least 1985.

Now, young women are joining together to explore beer drinking. Clubs are forming around the country, such as Milwaukee’s Barley’s Angels. In these clubs, women can share their favorite beers and drinking experiences. The group meets monthly at various locations and can draw as many as 40 women at a time.

“I like craft beer a lot, and this seemed like a good opportunity to meet with other people who like beer. It feels more personal drinking something that’s brewed in a small batch,” said Sarah Booth, age 29, at a recent meeting.
