A beach in Wisconsin popularized by its nude patrons is being closed on weekdays because of rampant sexual cruising, public sex and illicit drug use.
The beach — Mazomanie Beach in Dane County, located northwest of Madison — is being closed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, reports The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.
Beginning immediately, the stretch of beach — and the islands and other areas associated with it — will be closed weekdays from March 1 through Sept. 15. It will be open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. all other times of the year.
Last year, 19 people were arrested for illicit sexual activities and three for drug use at the beach. A supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources said, “Our goal is to have everybody feel safe and comfortable.”
The arrests might be higher if enforcement were greater. Public nudity isn’t permitted under Wisconsin law, but a lack of manpower led to wardens only arresting people who violate other laws at the beach.
