daily apple rumors AAPL[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:

Signal: Sources in Asia tell DigiTimes that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) has reduced its second-quarter shipments of the iPad Mini[4] by 20%. That means that Apple expects to ship between 10 million and 12 million iPad Minis during the quarter. The sources did not reveal a reason for the production cuts. However, Apple is widely expected to launch its next-generation iPad Mini sometime between now and fall. Reducing production of the existing iPad Mini could mean the company is preparing for that event. The updated iPad Mini is rumored to feature a high-resolution Retina screen. Alternately, the shipment cuts could signal that the iPad Mini is encountering tough competition from similar-sized tablets with lower price tags running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG[5]) Android OS. DigiTimes has a mixed record of reliability when it comes to Apple rumors.

More Litigation: Apple is being sued in China over its Siri voice assistant[6], Shanghai Daily reports. Shanghai Zhi Zhen Internet Technology filed a lawsuit against the iPhone maker in the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, alleging that Siri is too similar to its Xiaoi chat robot system and thus infringes on its patents. The company claims that Xiaoi has been under development since 2003 and has been patented in China since 2006. Siri was acquired by Apple in 2010 and was introduced in the iPhone 4S in 2011. Apple has requested that Chinese regulators invalidate the patent.

Early Start: Part of Apple’s new data center, located outside Reno, Nev., will start operation within a week[7], AppleInsider notes. The Reno facility — the company’s fourth data center — had been reported to be in the early planning stage. However, a small 20,000 square-foot structure is already complete and is ready to be brought online. The data center is built on 345 acres, giving Apple plenty of room to expand the center as needed. The Reno data center is expected to provide support for Apple’s iCloud service.
