Honda[1]Five new cars have won the insurance industry’s award for being safest in a crash.

The Top Safety Pick+ award, doled out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, goes to vehicles that have done well in previous crash tests and also passed a new small overlap frontal crash test, reports Bloomberg[2].

The five newest entries on the list — the Honda (NYSE:HMC[3]) Civic 2- and 4-door, Ford’s (NYSE:F[4]) Lincoln MKZ, Volvo’s (PINK:VOLVY[5]) XC60 and Mazda’s (PINK:MZDAF[6]) 2013 Mazda 6 — all won the award yesterday. The five are an addition to the list that already includes 13 other vehicles[7] that were given the award last year.

The insurance industry group developed the new tests to measure how well vehicles dealt with front-end collisions. That type of collision accounts for nearly 25% of deaths and serious injuries in collisions.
