Five new cars have won the insurance industry’s award for being safest in a crash.
The Top Safety Pick+ award, doled out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, goes to vehicles that have done well in previous crash tests and also passed a new small overlap frontal crash test, reports Bloomberg.
The five newest entries on the list — the Honda (NYSE:HMC) Civic 2- and 4-door, Ford’s (NYSE:F) Lincoln MKZ, Volvo’s (PINK:VOLVY) XC60 and Mazda’s (PINK:MZDAF) 2013 Mazda 6 — all won the award yesterday. The five are an addition to the list that already includes 13 other vehicles that were given the award last year.
The insurance industry group developed the new tests to measure how well vehicles dealt with front-end collisions. That type of collision accounts for nearly 25% of deaths and serious injuries in collisions.
