Every year, men and women who wish to wear revealing beach wear submit themselves to the application of hot wax and shaving to get a smooth, hairless look. However, researchers say that those treatments damage the skin, leaving it open bacteria that can cause illness, BBC notes.

After examining 30 patients at a private French clinic, researchers found that skin infections had produced lesions around bikini lines in both men and women who had shaved or waxed their pubic areas. Those infections could then be spread to others through direct contact or sharing towels.

The trend of bikini line hair removal has become popular among men as well as women. In fact, most of the patients involved in the study were men.

In preparation for the upcoming beach season, discount retailer Target (NYSE:TGT) is running six pages of ads in Time Warner‘s (NYSE:TWX) Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issue, in order to promote its product’s the issue’s surprisingly large number of female readers.
