Whole Foods First to Make GMO Labeling Mandatory

The company’s stores in Britain already label all food products containing genetically modified ingredients. The company supported a California ballot measure that would have mandated such labeling for food products sold in the state, but voters rejected the proposal in November, the Los Angeles Times notes.

Whole Foods says it wants to implement “full GMO transparency.” The chain sells more than 3,300 products that do not contain genetically modified ingredients. Genetically modified grains and other food products have been produced by companies like Monsanto (NYSE:MON).

In January, Whole Foods’ CEO John Mackay said that President Barack Obama’s health care law was similar to fascism. He had previously compared it to socialism. After criticism, Mackay softened his tone somewhat, but continued to oppose the law.

Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled that genetically modified salmon do not pose a danger to consumers or the environment.

Shares of Whole Foods climbed more than 1% in Monday afternoon trading.
