Disgraced college basketball coach Mike Rice might have been fired, but he’ll still be cashing one last check from Rutgers.
The coach — who recently was fired after a video of his verbally and physically abusing his players as well as shouting homophobic slurs — is getting a $100,000 bonus from the school, the Associated Press is reporting.
Rice earned the bonus as a part of his contract. He is due the money because he remained with the school through the end of last year’s basketball season. Without the bonus, Rice earned $622,500 in 2012 with his salary and other bonuses.
A spokesman for Rutgers says the school is contractually obligated to pay the bonus. The university first learned about Rice’s behavior last December. Had it acted to dismiss him then, Rice would not have earned the bonus and the school would have saved the money.
