Star Wars Logo 300x181 Disney Promises 5 New Star Wars Films by 2019As it ramps up production, Disney (NYSE:DIS) is promising five new Star Wars movies by the end of the decade.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the movies — which Chairman Alan Horn says will include three storyline movies and two spinoff films — will come out one per year.

Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise when it purchased LucasFilm and its related companies six months ago from owner George Lucas. The company paid Lucas more than $4 billion in cash and stock for the company.

Star director J.J. Abrams is directing the first of the storyline movies for a summer 2015 release. Oscar-winner Michael Arndt is writing the screenplay. Following that, storyline movies will follow in 2017 and 2019 with the spinoff movies — which are being written by veteran Star Wars screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg — being released in 2016 and 2018.
