Superstar rapper Jay-Z is launching his own sports agency and has his first high-profile client.
The star — famous for his music and his marriage to Beyonce — has founded Roc Nation Sports and signed New York Yankee Robinson Cano, The New York Times reports.
By signing Cano — who was represented by the powerful Scott Boras — Jay-Z has made a strong statement about the new firm. The rapper has long been a friend and adviser to music and sports stars around the world and can now leverage those friendships into his growing business empire.
In addition to being a music star, Jay-Z is an entrepreneur as well. Roc Nation Sports adds to Jay-Z’s list of ventures that includes representing music stars, a partial ownership in the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, nightclubs, fashion lines and even video games.
“What a Jay-Z brings to the table is an ability to connect with the athletes in a way that a player agent who came up as a lawyer or accountant never will,” Marc Ganis, president of SportsCorp, says.
