An investigation by Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) ESPN indicates that celebrity charities are not always helpful.
The report — done by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” team — showed that many of the charities set up by star athletes and other celebs don’t meet accepted practices for giving, reports ESPN.
An example is the Cathy’s Kids charity set up by Lamar Odom. Both Odom — and wife Khloe Kardashian — promote the foundation as means to help children with cancer. However, over its eight-year life, the charity has failed to provide any grants of money to cancer-fighting groups.
The investigation used the guidelines established by the watchdog organizations Charity Navigator, the Better Business Bureau and the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy. Overall, “Outside the Lines” found that almost 75% of the charities it looked at failed to meet the guidelines established by the three groups.
Other athlete charities the report indicates aren’t performing properly are those set up by Randy Moss, Alex Rodriguez and Chris Zorich.
