Maine’s North Pond Hermit Arrested for Theft

December Snow Trees 300x225 Maine's North Pond Hermit Arrested for Theft[1]After spending almost three decades living in the wilderness[2], Christopher Knight has a new home: jail.

The 47-year old, infamous to residents of Maine as the North Pond Hermit, was arrested for stealing food from a local campsite. Police say Knight may have been responsible for more than 1,000 thefts from homes and campsites in the area during his time living in the woods, the Globe and Mail notes.

Knight is believed to have started living alone in the woods when he was 19. He subsisted on food stolen from cottages in the area, but often looted the nearby Pine Tree Camp.

Police have been looking to catch Knight in the act for some time. They recently deployed surveillance equipment and sensors, which ultimately alerted them when he tried to make off with $238 worth of food and supplies from a campground on Tuesday.

Authorities have located the makeshift tent in which Knight lived. Among his possessions were a small propane cooking stove and a portable radio.

Knight is currently in an Augusta, Maine, jail. He is facing burglary and theft charges. His bail has been set at $5,000.

Last week, homeless man living in Bloomington, Ill., won $50,000 in a scratch-off ticket lottery[3].
