Electronic Arts ERTSThe latest music and photo sharing network app comes from an unexpected source.

Leading video game maker Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA) has unveiled an app for Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and iPad that permits users to exchange music and photos with other users on a dedicated social network, VentureBeat notes.

Sources said the app was an exploratory project that originated within the EA Partners group on a limited budget. For now the app can only be downloaded and used by Apple device owners in Canada and Australia.

The free app can incorporate music from streaming service like Spotify and Rdio and photos from Facebook (NASDAQ:FB).

While Electronic Arts is best known for gun-totting video games like Mass Effects, Dead Space 3 and Medal of Honor, the company is attempting to expand its revenue base as video game sales continue to contract in response to competition from mobile gaming.

Shares of Electronic Arts rose fractionally in Thursday afternoon trading.
