Pop star Justin Bieber found himself facing international criticism for leaving what some perceived as a self-absorbed and flippant guest book message at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
After a visit to the home where the young Jewish girl hid from the Nazis for two years, on Friday Bieber left the following message in the museum’s guest book: “Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” Bieber’s fans are commonly called beliebers, CNN International noted.
The Anne Frank House posted the message on its Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) page, quickly sparking outrage from Internet users worldwide.
While message boards filled with angry and indignant posters, the Anne Frank House posted a Facebook statement praising Bieber for showing interest in Frank’s experiences. The pop star reportedly remained at the museum for over an hour.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Bieber could end up facing criminal charges stemming from an altercation with a neighbor in California.
Bieber is in the Netherlands on his current concert tour.
