Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM) chain Pizza Hut has gone “crazy” looking for the next way to make pizza fresh and exciting.
Set to debut on Wednesday, its newest innovation — the “Crazy Cheesy Crust” — features round pockets of cheese-stuffed bread attached to the pizza. Cheese-loving patrons can pluck the cheese pockets off the pizza and eat them separately. Each pizza can feature as many as 16 pockets.
The new dish is being tested around the country and will only be available for a matter of weeks, the Associated Press reports. A similar item, the “Stuffed Crust Pizza” was tested in 1995 and became so popular it became a regular part of Pizza Hut’s menu.
Pizza Hut executives say that getting the new item right required over a year of product development. It was developed exclusively for the U.S. market and timed to coincide with the NCAA Basketball Tournament’s Final Four, when pizza sales spike.
