Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon was arrested over on Friday in Atlanta, Ga.
The actress — most recently seen in Mud and This Means War — was arrested for disorderly conduct following her husband being stopped on suspicion of drunken driving, Reuters reports.
Witherspoon’s husband, agent James Toth, was pulled over when he crossed a double yellow line. When questioned, Toth smelled of alcohol and failed a breathalyzer test. Witherspoon, who was warned to remain in the couple’s car, refused to do so and became confrontational with police. She claimed that, as an American citizen, she had the right to “stand on American ground” and told the officer, “You’re about to find out who I am. … You’re going to be on national news.”
In a statement, the actress later said that she couldn’t comment on the case, but wanted to say, “But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behavior.”
