Zach Braff is hoping his fans can help him fund a new movie.
Braff — who last directed Garden State and played Dr. John Dorian in Scrubs — wants to raise $2 million to fund the production of Wish I Was Here, New York Daily News reports.
Braff says the success that the Veronica Mars production team had with using Kickstarter to fund a movie made him think of going the crowd-funding route. He believes asking fans to contribute will allow him more directorial control than traditional movie funding sources.
“I was about to sign a typical financing deal in order to get the money to make ‘Wish I Was Here,’ my follow up to ‘Garden State,” Braff writes on his Kickstarter page. “It would have involved making a lot of sacrifices I think would have ultimately hurt the film.”
Fans seems to be responding. Within a few hours of the campaign starting, it raised more than $760,000 for the movie. It has just under a month remaining to raise the final $1,250,000.
