Slow Update: Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) is planning a major overhaul of iOS’s visual interface[4], according to a report on Daring Fireball. The company has scheduled the release of iOS 7 to accompany the debut of its iPhone 5S later this year. However, work on the updated OS has fallen behind expectations and Apple is scrambling to complete the project in time for the next iPhone launch. Designers and engineers have been re-assigned from other projects to work on the new OS. Always conscious of security, Apple is said to require people working on the project to cover their devices with filters to prevent outsiders from seeing the appearance of the new interface.

Cupertino, We Have a Problem: The cost of Apple’s new high-tech headquarters complex[5] has soared by $2 billion in just two years, Bloomberg notes. The Cupertino, Calif., campus — which will feature a circular, glass-faced central building that has been described as resembling a spacehip — was originally estimated to cost $3 billion. But delays and changes have boosted its projected cost to $5 billion. The finish date for construction has also been delayed from 2015 to 2016. The rising cost of the project has been attributed to expensive design elements that late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs wished to see included in the building.

Compliance: Apple has removed an app from its Chinese App Store that permitted users to read three books prohibited by the Chinese Communist Party[6], CNET notes. The developer the app received a letter from Apple explaining that his app had been deleted from the store because it included illegal content. The objectionable content appears to be three books about China’s occupation of Tibet from a noted Chinese dissident. Those works have been banned by Chinese authorities. This week, CEO Tim Cook posted a public apology to Chinese consumers on the company’s website following a series of state-run Chinese media attacks on Apple’s warranty policies.
