Google will have to construct local infrastructure for its broadband service in Austin, a potentially expensive proposition. Analysts estimate that if cost the company $84 million to connect 149,000 homes in Kansas City.

Company officials said that subscribers to the service, which will arrive in Austin homes in 2014, could expect to pay rates similar to those paid by Kansas City residents. That would mean about $70 a month.

In addition to ultra-fast Internet service, Google Fiber can carry cable programming, though not all channels are available on the system. TV service costs another $50 per month in Kansas City.

Shares of Google rose fractionally in Wednesday morning trading.
