Bars, Restaurants Charged With Serving Fake LiquorLast week, New Jersey Attorney General Jeffry Chiesa announced that state investigators had raided 29 food and drink venues across the state over allegations that they were substituting cheap alcohol for high-end branded drinks.

The state spent a year probing the establishments in an effort dubbed “Operation Swill.” State officials found that the restaurants and bars had deceived customers into believing they were paying high prices for premium liquor when they were in fact receiving nothing of the sort, the Star-Ledger noted.

Investigations said that one bar sold dirty water as liquor, while another added caramel food coloring to rubbing alcohol and sold it as scotch.

Among the restaurants facing charges in the sting are 13 franchised TGI Friday’s locations owned by Briad Group, as well as one DineEquity’s (DIN) Applebees and a Ruby Tuesday (RT) location.
