Wireless carriers are mostly known for competing with each other. But the four largest U.S. carriers have found one point of agreement: they don’t want subscribers to send text messages while driving.
To drive that point home, Verizon‘s (NYSE:VZ) Verizon Wireless, AT&T (NYSE:T), Sprint (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) have partnered with more than 200 other organizations to launch and advertising campaign to raise awareness of the potentially lethal consequences of texting while driving. The ads will promote AT&T’s existing “It Can Wait” campaign on TV and radio stations over the coming months, the Associated Press notes.
Wireless carriers have not always been so vocal about the dangers of distracted driving. Most providers resisted earlier legislation against driving while using a cellphone. However, anti-texting while driving campaigns date back to 2005. Sprint, Verizon and AT&T have all run ads decrying the practice over the past eight years.
A study from Texas A&M University recently found that drivers who used voice-to-text apps were no less distracted than drivers who used cellphone keypads to text.
Shares of AT&T and T-Mobile slipped fractionally in Tuesday morning trading, while Verizon and Sprint edged slightly higher.
