The company kicked off service in Boston on Wednesday, transmitting TV programing from major broadcasters across its city-wide network of antennas. Until today,¬†Aereo’s $8-a-month subscription service, which is backed by media mogul Barry¬†Diller, was only available in New York City, the Associated Press notes

Aimed at people who have ditched their high-priced cable subscriptions, Aereo’s service around Atlanta will cover 55 counties in Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama. Viewing options will include more than two dozen broadcast channels and Bloomberg TV.

Aereo transmits the signals from broadcast networks without paying a retransmission fee. This has provoked litigation[3] from CBS (NYSE:CBS[4]), News Corp.‘s (NASDAQ:NWSA[5]), Disney‘s (NYSE:DIS[6]) and Comcast‘s (NASDAQ:CMCSA[7]) NBC, which have denounced the service as infringing on their protected content.

Fox Network officials have threatened to end over-the-air broadcasting and adopt a subscription model[8] if the courts rule in Aereo’s favor. CBS officials have made similar comments.
