A new list put together by Bankrate.com shows the best states in which to retire. Surprisingly, many states not typically associated with retirement communities made the list this year.

The list factors availability of medical care and hospital beds, crime rates, average temperature and weather conditions and the tax burden. Each of the measures are weighted and combined into a single score to determine the best states for new retirees.

Here’s the full list of the top 10 states in which to retire:

  1. Tennessee: Second lowest cost-of-living
  2. Louisiana: Low taxes and good weather
  3. South Dakota: Very low crime and taxes
  4. Kentucky: Fifth lowest cost of living
  5. Mississippi: Warm weather and low taxes
  6. Virginia: Better than average in all measures
  7. West Virginia: Better access to medical care
  8. Alabama: Low state and local taxes
  9. Nebraska: Excellent hospitals and low crime
  10. North Dakota: Low crime and very low taxes
