The ads promoted Camel Crush brand, which features a menthol flavored capsule in the cigarette’s filter. They ran in 24 magazines including People and Sports Illustrated. A number of anti-smoking and medical groups, including the American Lung Association and American Heart Association, claim the ads violate the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (TMSA), which bans tobacco advertising to children, the Associated Press notes.

The groups have requested investigations of the ads in two states.

RAI defends the ads, noting that adults comprise at least 85% of the magazines in which they appeared. The company says the ads comply with TSMA stipulations.

Shares of RAI rose modestly in Friday morning trading.
