Designed to cater to health-conscious and vegetarian diners, CMG believes that Sofritas may appeal to enough consumers to make it a successful crossover item. Starting next month, Sofritas will be available at all CMG restaurants in California, Restaurant News notes.
Sofritas is CMG’s second try at developing a popular vegetarian menu item. It’s previous effort — Garden Blend — proved unsuccessful and was later abandoned.
The restaurant chain began testing the new item, which combines tofu with spices, chipotle chiles and poblanos several months ago at select locations in San Francisco. Sofritas can be added to tacos, salads or burritos.
In March, the chain bowed to repeated requests from a food blogger to release a full list of the ingredients for all of its dishes.
Shares of CMG edged higher in Friday morning trading.
