What Consumer Reports found in random samples of turkey might surprise consumers.
According to Consumer Reports, the survey — which conducted a random sample of 257 packages of ground turkey — found that more than 90% of the packages contained hazardous bacteria.
More than half the packages tested were positive for some form of fecal bacteria, including e. coli and enterococcus. In some other samples, deadly salmonella and staphylococcus was found. More troubling, most of the strains detected were resistant to common antibiotics. It’s theorized that antibiotics — given to sick birds and to healthy ones to increase their rate of growth — are speeding the rate that drug-resistant germs are spreading.
In another odd finding, those packages of turkey labeled as using “no antibiotics” or “organic” were found be as likely to contain bacteria as any other packages. However, those bacteria were less likely to be an antibiotic superbug.
