Disney Pulls Princess Makeover After Angry Outcry

'Brave' director decried new image as 'horrible'

merida 300x180 Disney Pulls Princess Makeover After Angry OutcryThe new and controversial reworking of the “Merida” character from Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Brave is over.

The makeover — which took the boyish character and made her more princess-like — had caused significant outcry from fans and women’s groups, The Guardian reports.

In the re-imagining — which was intended to introduce her into the “Disney Princess” product line — Merida was given larger breasts, a thinner waist, makeup and more stylish clothing. She also lost her trademark bow and arrow.

The move to sexualize the character for marketing purposes drew protests. More than 200,000 people have signed on to a change.org petition asking that Disney withdraw the alterations. Even Brave co-director and writer Brenda Chapman took issue, calling the change “horrible.”

“When little girls say they like it because it’s more sparkly, that’s all fine and good but, subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy ‘come-hither’ look and the skinny aspect of the new version,” Chapman said. “It’s horrible.”

While Disney hasn’t announced the pullback, the new character design has vanished from the company’s website.
