Dr. Phil Sues Gawker Media Over Manti Te’o Segment

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadspin.com — which is owned by Gawker — ran video of Dr. Phil’s interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo before Dr. Phil’s own show could do so. Tuiasosopo is the man at the center of the Manti-Te’o fake girlfriend drama that occurred during the college football playoffs.

The suit claims that Deadspin — by running the footage before it aired — damaged the show’s ratings by running copyrighted clips before they appeared in all markets. The footage — according to the suit — appeared at 9:30 a.m., hours before the Dr. Phil show ran the footage.

According to the suit, Deadspin and other media aggregation sites are parasites. In an analogy, the suit says “A remora is a fish, sometimes called a suckerfish, which attaches itself to other fish like sharks. The host fish gains nothing from the relationship but the remora is enriched by obtaining benefits (usually food and transportation) from the host. Gawker received substantial benefits from its infringement but Pateski received nothing that is, unless its damages are compensated in this lawsuit.”
