Homebuilders Can’t Find Enough Qualfied Workers

Shortage is holding up the industry

Home constructionHomebuilders across the country are having trouble finding qualified people.

Builders — who are beginning to see rising demand — can’t keep up because of the shortage of workers, the Associated Press reports.

The shortage affects the builders and subcontractors, as well.

“There is a shortage of manpower. We’re probably only hiring about 75 or 80 percent of what we actually need,” says Richard Vap, who owns a drywall company in Colorado.

Much of the shortage comes as many experienced professionals left the industry completely after the housing bubble burst. While builders are willing to hire these people again, they’ve moved on to other jobs and industries are are shy about returning to a building career that might implode again.

Still, home building is booming. Housing starts grew 47% from March 2012 to March 2013 and hiring has risen 4.1% from April to April. In March, new starts topped 1 million for the first time since 2008 and permits for new construction are also near a five-year high.
