‘Iron Man 3’ Has Biggest Box-Office Opening Ever in China

Reports say film took in $21.5 million on opening day

iron man 3The latest film in the Marvel Universe, Iron Man 3, has set records with its Chinese opening.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film — produced by Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Marvel Studios — did a reported $21.5 million at the Chinese box office yesterday.

The boffo opening day saw the film pass the previous record, set by Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which brought in $17 million in China. The record was part of a tremendous $307.7 million overseas opening for the latest Iron Man picture. That’s more than the entire overseas run of the first Iron Man movie, Thor or Captain America.

The new movie is a special experiment for China. Produced partially with investment money from China, several minutes worth of extra China-centric footage — including product placement — was shot only for show in China. Audience reaction has been mixed on the extra scenes so far.

Iron Man 3 opened in the United States late Thursday night. Initially expectations are that it will bring in at least $150 million over the weekend.
