During a session in which shareholders were permitted to pose questions to senior executives, nine-year-old Canadian Hannah Robertson told Don Thompson that she didn’t think it was fair when “big companies try to trick kids into’ eating food that isn’t good for them,” ABC News noted.
Robertson had accompanied her mother, a member of Corporate Accountability International, to the meeting. The girl told Thompson that McDonald’s should stop “trying to trick kids into wanting to eat” its food.
She added that “eating healthy food can be fun and yummy.” Her mother asked Thompson to stop marketing to children.
Thompson pointed out that his own children eat at McDonald’s, but that they also eat healthy foods made at home. He also noted that the chain offers a variety of fruit and vegetable-heavy menu items.
Shares of McDonald’s fell 1% in Friday morning trading.
