Diehard Star Wars fans have more to look forward to than just a string of new movies.
On Monday, Disney (DIS) announced that a new animated series, set in the Star Wars universe, will debut on its Disney Channel and Disney DX. The TV show will air launch before the release of the first new Star Wars film, which is slated to hit theaters in 2015, Reuters notes.
The new animated show will be called Star Wars Rebels and will explore growing resistance to the Galactic Empire during the period between the Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise from its creator, George Lucas, for $4 billion last year.
Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will helm the upcoming Star Wars movie, titled Star Wars: Episode VII.
Shares of Disney slipped fractionally in Monday afternoon trading.
