A painting of Golden Girls star Bea Arthur sold for $1.9 million dollars in a Wednesday night auction.
John Currin painted the portrait in 1991, and says it was based on a photograph of the actress while clothed. The portrait was sold to an anonymous bidder at Christie’s contemporary art sale.
Arthur won Emmy awards in 1977 and 1988 for her roles in Maude and The Golden Girls, respectively. She died of cancer in 2009.
