Kraft’s (NASDAQ:KRFT) Oscar Mayer hot dogs are upping the ante in the wiener wars.
The company — just in time for summer — is launching its own line of bacon hot dogs, Advertising Age reports.
Unlike other bacon-wrapped hot dogs, Oscar Mayer has cooked the bacon actually inside the wieners. This is the first time that bacon has been sold as an integral piece of the hot dog. The wieners also contain turkey, chicken and pork products.
In a statement, the company said, “We know Americans love bacon, and we know they love hot dogs, so it seemed like the perfect time for us to introduce our first hot dog made with bacon.”
The timing is critical to the new product’s success. According to industry sources, more than 7 billion hot dogs will be eaten during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Oscar Mayer will be promoting the Bacon Dog via social media and in-store displays.
