Italian luxury car-maker Lamborghini is marking its 50th birthday by breaking the sports car mold.
The company, owned by Germany’s Volkswagen (PINK:VLKAY), is showing off a concept car, dubbed the Egoista, that features seating for only one. The car’s wheels and cabin are trimmed in bright orange leather. The cockpit, detachable from the vehicle, is designed to accommodate only the driver, who is held in place with a racing harness. Instrument data is provided through a heads-up display that takes its cues from those found in fighter jets, the Daily News notes.
Lamborghini says the cockpit design was influence by the layout of Apache helicopter cockpits. Unlike an Apache, the Egoista’s cockpit cannot be ejected at the push of a button. It will, however, protect the driver in the event of an accident.
With a sleek, aerodynamic exterior shell, the Egoista’s is powered by a 600-horsepower engine. Lamborghini did not mention a potential price for the concept car, which may never make it to production.
Earlier this year, Lamborghini delivered its Veneno sports car to three buyers, each of whom paid $3.9 million for the privilege.
Shares of Volkswagen rose 2% in over-the-counter trading on Tuesday.
