On Thursday, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT[4]) said that it had migrated all remaining Hotmail accounts to its Outlook email service. Hotmail users can continue to use their old email addresses; email sent to Hotmail accounts will be redirected to Outlook, PC Magazine noted.

Hotmail debuted in 1996. A year later, Microsoft acquired the service for a reported $400 million.

Last year, Microsoft announced plans to migrate Hotmail users to Outlook as part of its plan to rebrand its web services and upgrade email accounts.

As of February, Hotmail still had 300 million active user accounts[5]. The company says it moved 150 million gigabytes of data to Outlook inside six weeks.

In October, ComScore released a report saying the number of users of Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG[6]) Gmail service had surpassed Hotmail’s for the first time[7]. In the report, Yahoo‘s (NASDAQ:YHOO[8]) mail service was ranked third, globally, by number of users.

Shares of Microsoft rose fractionally in Friday morning trading
