The cause of gray hair may have been revealed.
Writing in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, European researchers say that the graying of hair associated with age results from the slow build up of hydrogen peroxide in hair follicles, the Daily News notes.
As hydrogen peroxide accumulates inside hair follicles, hair emerging from the follicles is bleached, turning grey and white.
The researchers also say that they have developed a treatment to reverse the build-up of hydrogen peroxide, thus eliminating gray hair. The treatment is said to be a topically administered drug.
The researchers did not disclose when the new drug would be available, or how much it would cost.
In addition to treating gray hair, the drug can be applied to skin depigmentation caused by vitiligo.
