Target Tests New Facebook-Based Deals

'Cartwheel' social media effort actually meant to get shoppers back in stores

Target Target Tests New Facebook Based DealsRetail giant Target (NYSE:TGT) is moving to social media to try to get shoppers into its stores.

The new system — called “Cartwheel” — makes discounts available on social media site Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Reuters reports.

Target shoppers who are fans of the company’s Facebook page will get access to special discounts not available to the rest of the public. However, the discounts can only be used in a Target store, not online.

To use the system, shoppers — after selecting which deal they like — will receive a special barcode that entitles them to that discount. The barcodes can either be printed or saved on shopper’s phones for later use. They can earn more discounts by bringing their Facebook friends into the program as well.

The effort is part of Target’s moves that hope to combat the trend toward online shopping. By providing special discounts that require people to shop in stores, the company believes it can lure people into the habit of stopping at Target stores again.
