Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Fall: Component suppliers for Apple‘s (AAPL) next-generation iPhone have begun producing parts for the new phone, AppleInsider notes. According to an Wells Fargo Securities analyst, wireless chip-maker Avago Technologies (AVGO) is ramping up production of new components destined for the iPhone 5S. The timing of the moves signals that Apple will launch the iPhone 5S in September, which is in line with recent analyst guesses for the new iPhone’s launch. Earlier in the year, a number of analysts had claimed that the next iPhone could appear as early as June or July. But CEO Tim Cook appeared to throw cold water on that speculation when discussing the company’s quarterly results, saying that new products were coming in the fall. The iPhone 5 debuted on September 12 last year.
Second Look: On Tuesday, the International Trade Commission announced that it will review an earlier decision that found Samsung guilty of violating an Apple patent, Reuters noted. That decision, made in March, found that Samsung had infringed on Apple’s patent for text-selection software used in smartphones and tablets. In addition to the decision that found Samsung in violation of an Apple patent, the ITC will also re-evaluate a related decision that cleared Samsung of infringing on a second Apple patent. The ITC is expected to complete its review and issue a final ruling on August 1.
Design Issues: Apple’s plan to replace its San Francisco flagship Apple Store may have hit a snag, MacRumors notes. Earlier this month, the company submitted plans to build a new store with a front wall made entirely of glass in the city’s trendy Union Square district. City leaders had initially lauded the new design. However, critics pointed out that the new building would feature a windowless wall on the other side of the street and would mean the removal of a iconic fountain that currently sits on the proposed building’s site. Now San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee says he will review the proposal to determine if the fountain, crafted by a local artist, can be saved. The mayor also noted that he is working with Apple regarding objections to the windowless rear wall of the new building.
